Did you Talk About God?

Did you teach him how to ride his bike
Or how to swing a bat?
Did you discuss the things you like
Or how to wear a hat?
Did you wander ‘cross the meadows
When the sun shone over-head
Peer in to the shadows
Where a fawn had made her bed?
And did you talk about God?

Did you talk about the deeper things
Defining man and life?
On how to treat a mother
Then perhaps some day a wife
Did you discuss great wonders
Like a morning heaven-made?
Did you decide our blunders
Are a wise man’s tools of trade?
And did you talk about God?

Did you tell him what God says
On things like ‘right and wrong’?
Did you teach him how to pray
While he is still so young?
As you sat fishing in the shade
And watching dragonflies
Did you remind him just who made
The land and sea and skies?
And did you talk about God?

Did you talk about the King of kings?
The one true God above
As you discuss what this life brings
Does he know God is love?
Did you teach him to play football
Swing a hammer, climb a tree?
Does he know the best thing of all
Is God’s love for you and me?
Did you talk about God?

Fix these words of mine
in your hearts and your minds....
Teach them to your children
talking about them when you sit at home
and when you walk along the road,
when you lie down and when you get up. Deut.11:18-19
