Good Time

Grab the shovel it’s snowing again
Who left the key turned on in the van?
Get it boosted, empty light comes on
Lord, have mercy on a country mom

Open the fridge for the last bit of milk
Somebody drank what isn’t spilled
Supper plans change, left-overs are gone
Lord, have mercy on this country mom

Pick up the phone, I know it’s late
Hon, when are you home, we need a date
Trip on a toy, Lord guard my tongue
And please have mercy on this country mom

It’s Saturday night, mom’s starting to smile
In a way she hasn’t in a very long while
Listen up children, I know you’ll be fine
But your dad and I need a little ‘good time’

Dishwashing hands and floor-scrubbing knees
Tired ‘mommy brain’ move over please
God, I love all these blessings of mine
But once in a while we all need a ‘good time’

Tip-toe in at twelve o’clock
Way too late for old folk like us
I kind of missed these kids of mine
But honey, we sure did have a good time

Check the fridge, plan tomorrow’s lunch
After church we’re a hungry bunch
Thank God above for these blessings of mine
House full of love, and a good, good time

The Future

He was brown-haired and blue eyed
Rebel stare and grin wide
But I fell beneath his spell
When he said I’ll sing to you
His big specs nearly touched his chin
With big breath he began to sing
And heaven smiled upon the child
And on the song he knew

You are my sunshine,
My sunshine,my sunshine
Do you like this song of mine
My mommy teached to me?
I smiled at his gaze so blue
Yes my child I like it too
The song your mommy teached to you
Is lovely as can be

You are my future,
my future my future
Little boy do you know
That this is what I see
Your brown hair and blue eyes
Rebel stare and grin wide
Mothers little joy and pride
Is lucky as can be

For you are the future
The future, the future
Every dream that you dream
Could be reality
So dream while you’re singing
And sing while you’re dreaming
You are the future
Oh, won’t you sing to me?

When I was helping at school today I fell in love…..
With a little boy who had a tiny face and huge glasses…
AND A PENCHANT FOR MISCHIEF….
Then he asked if he could sing me a song,
And did I like it???
‘cause his mommy ‘teached’ it to him.
He sang, You are my sunshine….

Forgotten Child

Won’t you be a sweetie now?
Run quickly up to bed
I need to do some laundry
Tidy up her mother said
Tomorrow night perhaps there’ll be
Time to read a story
But there is too much work tonight
Before another morning

So up the long and wooden hill
The little angel climbs
Wishing mom would tuck her in
But there just isn’t time
Mother needs to do her chores
Before she leaves at dawn
So sweetie prays her evening prayer
Dear Jesus, bless my mom

And bless my baby-sitter please
She really is quite nice
She takes me to the playground
And she reads me stories- twice
But I sure miss my mommy
And she misses me I know
‘Cause that is what she tells me
When she says she loves me so

I have a bed-time story book
One minute tales and more
I’m not sure what the stories are
‘Cause I can’t read, I’m four
But next year when I go to school
My mom will be so proud
When I read her a story
And shell laugh to me out loud

Next year she’ll have more time I’m sure
When I’m a little taller
She won’t be quite so busy
As right now when I am smaller
Then I am sure that she will see
I really am quite good
Cause I’ll be so much bigger
And will do the things I should

Now I lay me down to sleep
Bless my mommy please
Little flannel angel weeps
Softly on her knees
I will be a sweetie now
Climb quickly into bed
I’d love to hug you mommy
But I’ll hug my bear instead
