Beautiful.....

The moon-light sure is beautiful
As it bathes the universe
In a silver wash
And as it reflects in your eyes
Enhancing their loveliness
And the stars sure are beautiful
As they’re randomly dispersed
Like diamond studs
Across the midnight velvet skies
In perfect randomness

And you sure are beautiful
As its light touches you just so
With a soft and gentle glow
A shimmer on your skin
Like a natural beautician
What a lovely sight to see
You most truly are to me
Ah yes, this night is most beautiful
I reach for your hand
For the most beautiful thing
I cannot understand…..

……The most beautiful thing I cannot really see
It is the love you have for me

You....

You drift to me on the taunting wind
Like distant strains of a mandolin
Or the comforting chatters of a brook
Vaguely recalled from a winter nook

You graze the surface of my skin
Like the soundless breath of a butterfly’s wing
The ghost of a smile in the pale moonlight
Flickers and fades beyond my sight

The brush of your finger-tips, a restless sigh
That escapes from my lips as you pass by
And all that remains for me to see
Is the wind as it tosses the willow-tree

If Love Were.....

If love were a tangible object
What do you suppose it would be?
Would it be a blooming magnolia
Or the golden maiden-hair tree?
Would it be a coral sunset
On the water in July?
Or the picture of our tango
‘Neath that sultry August sky?

If love were a tangible object
Would it be a rose?
A new-born babe, a diamond
Is that what you suppose?
Or would it simply be a tear?
Love’s wordless joy and sorrow
Or the arms that draw us near
As its warmth we borrow?

Would it be a moon-lit hill
Bathed in a misty shroud
Lingering o’er a tranquil sea
Beneath a silver cloud
Would it be a tender kiss
In silent ecstasy?
Or would it simply be this?
You here, next to me

Preferences

Some prefer the busy bustling boardwalk
Where the sun is warm and life is fine
Some prefer their second cup of coffee
Standing in some ticket-window line
Some prefer the voices and the laughter
In a crowd of stranger, comrade, friend
Some prefer a room of bantering chatter
Wishing that the party would not end

They can have their boardwalks in the summer
They can have an all night rendezvous
I prefer a moonlight walk at midnight
In a party made for only two
I prefer my second cup of coffee
Leaning on my darling lover's knee
And I admit I do enjoy a party
Big enough for only you and me

I prefer a show across the water
Silent as the stars on midnight blue
I could sit and gaze at it for hours
In the arms of tender love so true
Some prefer a theater of fine arts
I prefer a hillside with a view
I prefer soft kisses in the moonlight
In a party made for me and you

Another You

Other arms may reach to hold me
Other lips may kiss my cheek
Other ears will pause to listen
To the sentiments I speak
Other hands will touch my shoulder
Other hearts will love me too
But my darling there will never
Ever be another you

Other dreams will soon be waiting
Painting the horizon-line
In the misty summer moon-light
Other hands may pour love’s wine
Perhaps another voice will whisper
‘Neath a canopy of blue
But my darling there will never
Ever be another you

None will ever change your memory
Though the months and years may roll
No one can erase your whispers
Draw apart the melded soul
Yes, there will be many others
Here to share a mile or two
But my darling there will never
Ever be another you

After.....

After the busy toil and strife
After another day of life
After the sun has slipped away
As we hail the end of another day
After the moon climbs into its throne
Wrapping the world in a silver gown
After our words of the day have gone forth
For better or worse across the earth
After our worship, complaints and fears
After our laughter or silent tears
After all is said and done
And this day is forever gone
Did we make a difference as we lie down to rest?
Did we give God our very best?

Perfection

So, this is perfection then
I surmise as I watch the moon
climb
In silent, invisible ascent
The star-studded hallway
‘neath a royal blue tent
Its silver light a misty veil
Shining
On a globe now pale
Until a silent unseen Hand
Draws across its light a strand
Of purple cloud and the world below
Loses its enchanted silver glow
But still I know
This Hand which is in control
Of heaven, earth, each living soul
Eternally
Watching over you and me
And my breath becomes a prayer
Breathed into the velvet air
Softly
Lord God of creation
Thank-you for letting me behold
Perfection

Without a Word

When you looked at me from across the room
I could hear every word
While others were laughing and milling about
I knew they never heard….
But your words were as clear as your breath in my ear
Spoken with a glance
And your lingering gaze took my breath away
As you said, Shall we dance?

Shall we dance in the moon-light on far-off hills
Away from the noise and the fuss?
Our carpet the glow of the moon as it spills
Its shawl on the two of us?
If I leave this room will you come with me too
As we wander a country-mile
A rendezvous in a party for two
I answered you with a smile

Restless

What can I do then
To keep my mind from wandering
Back to the hour when
Its minutes were designed for squandering
On wind-swept hills
Or cabin-sills
Where silver moon-light
Softly spills
Upon a soundless night
Save for the wordless sigh
In the winds lullaby
As the power
Of its unwritten word
Leaves this summer heart
Sweetly stirred

What can I do then
To keep from pining
For the peaceful hour when
Summer and love intertwining
Find passion’s perfection
In the blue reflection
Of this soul-mates gaze
As its connection
Leaves me in a daze
For we cannot deny
That surely you and I
Have tasted a finer thing
Than friend-ships every-day offering

What can I say then
As I long for the day
And the sweet moment when
Winter and waiting pass away
Replaced by the tune
Of perfumed blooms
And grapes on the vine
As the silver moon
Breathes a grand design
On our living-room floor
Which was white before
But now at last is fresh and green
For summer and love have come again

Midnight Spell

You draw me…
Like a lover’s eyes across the room
And I come…
Casting off my shroud of gloom
Mystery flickers….
‘Round every charcoal bend
Shadows whisper…
Silence is my friend
You draw me…
Tease me with your silver gleam
And I come….
Cradle of my dreams

You draw me…
Past rustling corn-fields painted gray
And I come….
Shedding the sorrows of my day
With out-stretched arms…
You beckon, I cannot resist
You draw me…
Past the nodding daises, moon-light kissed
And I come…..
Climb the midnight wind-tossed hill
Into your arms
Where time stands still

Somewhere.....

Somewhere in the muted folds
Before the breath of pinks and golds
Breaks the sacred solemn hush
Endowed by midnights velvet brush
Somewhere among the charcoal plumes
And all the grey and silver blooms
Which boast their colors but by day
And hide by night in shades of grey
Ah, somewhere there beneath the pines
Sheltered by the whispering vines
And serenaded from the sky
By winsome breezes lullaby....
Somewhere among forgotten hills
Where a wisp of moon-light spills
A silver pool upon the grass
As the untallied minutes pass
Ah, somewhere there I wish to be
With God, in wordless poetry.

Who may ascend the hill of the Lord?
Or who may stand in His holy place?
He who has clean hands and a pure heart,
who does not lift up his soul to an idol
or swear by what is false.
He will receive blessing from the Lord. Ps. 24:3-5

My Perfect Christmas

It’s not the lights that twinkle
Or the snow-flakes as they swirl
It’s not the rippling laughter
Of each little boy and girl
It’s not the pretty ornaments
A-sparkling on the tree
This is not what makes
Christmas perfect for me

It’s not the lovely music
Or the chiming of the bells
It’s not the children singing
Though I love it very well
It’s not the cookies baking
Though they’re yummy as can be
No, this is not what makes
Christmas perfect for me

It’s not the silver moon light
Casting shadows on the snow
Reflecting on that first night
Of Christmas long ago
No these things are all
Just as lovely as can be
But it’s not what makes
Christmas perfect for me

It’s eyes that sparkle
With loves warm glow
It’s hands to hold
As we dash through the snow
It’s being surrounded
By loved ones so dear
Yes, that is what makes
Christmas perfect each year

It’s saying things like
“I love you, my dear”
That is what makes
Christmas perfect each year….
…all year long

Silver Love

The moonlight glow
Like silver snow
Gleams upon the meadow
I pause, entranced
Its mystic dance
Transforming muted shadows

As I absorb
This gleaming orb
Its essence seems to whisper
God is your light
In every night
Faithful, changeless Master

The moonlight’s glow
Like silver love flows
In to my broken spirit
Into the night air
I breathe a prayer
And I know God will hear it

Last night I caught a bright reflection,
out of the corner of my eye.
I thought someone was coming up the drive...
then I realized it was the full moon......
like a midnight noon,
Stunning.....
as it peeked into
the mirrors
of melted snow puddles.

When I consider Your heavens,
the work of Your fingers,
the moon and the stars,
which you have set in place,
What is man that You are mindful of Him,
or the son of man that You care for him? Ps. 8:3-4
