Purpose..........

Across the frigid dawn a pale glow leaks
To speak of labor to the common man
Arise, arise cast off the slumbering cheeks
The hovering night will soon be here again
And there are many mouths to feed
And there are many things we need
We cannot bask in slothful ease
Or lay in careless laziness

The anonymity of yester-years
And Time itself cannot command
Soon, too soon the End of things appears
To still the diligence of our hand
Ah, what is life but the bud of death?
What is the purpose of each breath?
The silent past taunts in reply
As daylight spawns across the sky

Still, the present pivots on the past
The future is not loaned to anyone
We must work before night shades are cast
And we slumber ‘neath the shoulder of a stone
Ah, what is life; a tirade to an early grave?
Whilst man appoints the master and the slave?
Who anoints Life’s purpose, ah pray tell?
Hence we awake, in Heaven or in hell

Above the wave hovers a white-winged gull
Yet it, as Time dissolves into the blue
Flesh is but a temporary hull
Before the fruit of our life is due
Man that is born of woman soon must die
As Time meets with its Maker in the sky
The work of hands cannot redeem us then
Life’s purpose lies not in the hearts of men

All man’s efforts are for his mouth
Yet his appetite is never satisfied. Eccles.6:7

Consider what God has done:
Who can straighten what he has made crooked? Eccles.7:13

For it is be grace you have been saved through faith.
....and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God
---not by works, so that no one can boast.
For we are God's workmanship,
created in Christ Jesus to do good works,
which God prepared in advance for us to do. Ephes.2:8-10

They Pass Away

What is a book?
Or what is fame?
They are another’s words
And another’s name
That new hit single
Will soon be number one
But where does it go
When its climb is done
It will follow all others
Into decay
For everything in this life
Will pass away

Wreaths on a grave-stone
Clouds in the sky
Blooms on the grapevine
The tear in our eye
The storm in its fury
The calm of the morn
Youth in its beauty
All dies that is born
The bud then the glory
And the slow sad decay
This life and each story
Will pass away

The knowledge of scholars
The wisdom of age
The rise of a nation
May grace this earth’s stage
The dormant fallow
The dell rich and green
The winter and summer
And all in between
The lonely, the lovely
The bright and the gray
Mere drops on a canvas
That will pass away

Sleepy?

I was so sleepy when I opened my eyes
But something within beckoned me to rise
And as my feet touched upon the floor
Suddenly I wasn’t tired anymore
I longed these yawning hours to fill
For it wouldn’t be very long until
My head touched this pillow once again
Will I have lived this day in vain?

I gaze in awe at the eastern skies
Glowing in the compassion of a new sun-rise
Here is a gift shining from above
Humbly I lift to Him a heart of love
For He’s seen my sad accomplishments few
But still He gives me a dawn brand new
Will I strive with all that is within me
To be the best in Him I can be?

An hour then two and so a life quickly passes
What will I leave on this earth’s tender grasses?
Will there be anything good and kind
Seen in the footprints that I leave behind?
Surely my greatest sorrow in life
As I bear my lot of trouble and strife
Ah, surely my greatest sorrow would
If at the end of my life I saw nothing, but me

Ephesians 2: 1-10........Don't these words offer us true purpose in EVERY day??!!!!

As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, 2in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient. 3All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our sinful nature[a] and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature objects of wrath. 4But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, 5made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved. 6And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, 7in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus. 8For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— 9not by works, so that no one can boast. 10For we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

Before....

Before the fingers of the ruby dawn
Have stretched then faded to noon and beyond
Before they brush the western sky
Directing heavens lullaby
Before another day is past
As its charcoal shade is cast
And twilight fills the western sky
Will we have made a difference, you and I?

Before we lay again to rest
Will we have striven to do our best?
To touch another life with love
A foretaste of our life above
Will we have reached to hold the hand?
Of one who needed help to stand?
Before the evening ruby sigh
Will we have made a difference, you and I?

Will we have paused to kneel and pray?
Before the close of another day
Will we, in everything we do
Serve a higher calling true
Before the golden-ruby tones
Splash upon our streets and lawns
Will we have given our best try
To make a difference, you and I?

The sun-rise began with a narrow strand
Along the horizon-line,
It continued to grow til its ruby glow
Burst into brilliant sunshine!!!!

I'm drawn again to one of my favorite verses...
When I consider the heavens,
the work of Thy fingers.....
what is man that you are mindful of him? Ps. 8:3&4

If I Didn't Know You

If I didn’t know you
A sunset would simply be
Colors in the sky
If I didn’t know you a butterfly
Would simply be
A butterfly
I’d never hear You whisper
In the evening breeze
Or know you are the Master
Of all my stormy seas
And when I feel so lonely
I’d truly be alone
If you were not my best Friend
That I have ever known

If I didn’t know you
Then my life would be
A series of random events
And every joy or tear I’ve known
Would be sadly
And uselessly spent
The dearest loves I treasure
Victims of circumstance
And I could never measure
The value of this dance
My life would be a journey
With no destiny in view
A futile race to nowhere
If I didn’t know You

But I do know You
Master painter of
Each sunset in the sky
Yes, I know you
Creator of the hurricane
And butterfly
As the breezes whisper
Your love songs from above
I bow before You, Master
Before the God I love
For I know You just a little
You know me through and through
Yet you love me anyway
Oh my God, how I love You

A Dandelion Seed

Alas, alas, our days are as grass
Our wisdom a grain of sand
Alas, alas, the summers pass
As I, like a mute yet stand
Whilst time, like phantom infantry
Marches beyond the hills
Beyond the moon, beyond the sea
Beyond the starry sills

What is life; the meaning thereof
Is this an endless quest?
Thirst of the unknown, beneath, above
Is it foolishness at best?
Alas, alas, upon earths grass
I ponder the meaning of this
For I as all mankind will pass
Into the eternal abyss

Alas, alas, if but for one Gift
Our lives would be nothing more
Than the breeze that sets the seed adrift
Or the wave that laps the shore
A manger, a cross, an empty tomb
A Savior for mankind
Without which man would be dust of doom
A dandelion seed in the wind
