I am a Poet

Do not call me
A recluse
Even though I am
Loneliest in
A room full
Of people
The gift of gab
Was given
But not to me
I am most free
While indulging in
The smell of ink
The taste of pen
As I scribble
And think
And ponder
As I silently
Weigh and wonder
The questions and
Answers in
This thing called
Life…..
Do not call me
A recluse
If I should prefer
To sit and muse…
I am as God
Made me
A lover
Of quiet and still
Of night
And moon-lit hill
Observing obscurely
The rules of
Life.
Blissfully tormented
Perhaps….
Oh, I know it
But I was born
This way for
I am a
Poet

Cure for Tumbled Thoughts

You tumble…..
Tumble….
Tumble…………
Like clothes in a dryer,
Over each other…
Over….
And over…….
Wish I could smother
The ones that seek to
Make a liar
Liar.
Liar…………….
Out of me….
Set me free
Free…..
.free
From this dizzying cycle…..
As they tumble……..
Tumble….
Tumble…………..
Bright and muted colors
Swirling.
Twirling……………..
Round and round…
I think I’ve found
The answer…..
Peace at last!!!!!!!!!!!
M-m-m-m—m!!
Coffee, you never let me down!!!!
Cheers!!

Blue Moon Lullaby

The blue wind moans in languid tones
Across the sleeping hills
Where once we danced and laughter glanced
Upon the wooded rills
The drooping flower which graced the hour
Before the lowering sky
Has shed its tear as we both hear
A blue moon lullaby

The feathered leaves of willow trees
Lay strewn like golden snow
And from the sky a distant sigh…
My dreams of long ago
The mournful song of old and young
Blend in the lone birds cry
For none can pass on yester’s grass
In a blue moon lullaby

The blue wind moans in languid tones
Its sonnet fills the air
It stirs the dust where soon I must
Relinquish every care
What is man, this briefest span
Of life before I die?
A bud that grows to a withered rose
In a blue moon lullaby

And thus the years like petal-tears
Lay scattered at my feet
Whilst distant gleams of faded dreams
Waft o’er my lone retreat
But then I hear a Voice so near
Breathe from the purple sky
I know tis He who speaks to me
In a blue moon lullaby

I Saw Her Today

I caught a glimpse of her today
An eight-year-old bundle of laughter and play
Into the leaves with a flying leap
Burying herself in the earth-scented heap
Blonde hair streaming and blue eyes shining
Inhaling the freedom of autumn’s refining
I gazed….perhaps wistfully with a hint of a smile
For I saw her today for a little while

I saw her today, timid, fifteen
Her eyes far away in the midst of a dream
So lovely and tender, unmarred by life’s churning
Awakening the heart to a girl’s deeper yearning
Tomorrow’s woman waits on the brink
As I beheld her I paused to think
And I reached out to touch her but she moved away
Yes, I caught a glimpse of her today

She passed by but life was calling
No time to sigh with idle recalling
A flick of her hand as she went out the door
Seventeen, not really a child anymore
I followed and longed to draw her back
Yet in the same moment I knew I would lack
What she now needs, so I let her go
But I saw her today for a moment or so

I saw her today for a little while
I don’t know whether to weep or to smile
It’s a mixture of sorrow and happiness
So I’ll do a little of both, I guess
For every so often, every now and then
I catch a glimpse of her again
The girl of yester-years, -no other
But I fight back the tears for I am….their Mother

Endless as a Summer Sky

It’s like a clear, blue summer sky
It’s like a flowing prairie
A silver cloud that passes by
To burst in golden memory
As sunset turns the blues to gold
And prairie greens are tarnished
So are dear memories that I hold
And carefully have garnished

Oh, can I not bid time to cease
Until its wealth I’ve garnered?
Then perhaps I’d watch in ease
Within a pleasant corner
And I could print each minute
Upon my memories pages
So I could revel in it
Far on down the ages

I watch the young lad as he dreams
Of being a grown man
And, as if being urged it seems
Too soon he’s crossed that span
Until he too must turn and sigh
To ask, where has time gone?
He longs to halt the years that fly
Too swiftly one by one

I treasure every passing day
As I’m forced to release them
For they must pass down history’s way
Where not one hand can seize them
And as I look to future quests
I’m comforted inside
To know that soon these trivial tests
In silence will abide

As endless as the summer sky
As endless as the prairie
Or as mysteries that still lie
In unlived phantom memory
God above, please hear my prayer
Grant me one small request
Before this day is buried there
Help me to do my best

Pining for August

Pining for August in December’s cold
Is like pining for youth when I am old
It’s as futile as yearning for yesterday’s friend
Or searching for gold at the rainbow’s end

Today is the brink between future and past
One brief moment of vapor and dust
And when it is gone I cannot draw it back
Or retrace one step of its elusive track

As I stand on the brink of yester’s tomorrow
Will it be a memory of laughter or sorrow?
Will I pine for its moments in soft reverie
Or try to erase it from my memory?

Lord, forgive me for my foolish pining
Teach me the merits of self-will resigning
Show me Your glory in every hour
Lest I find myself clinging to a wilted flower

My Dreaming Tree

Wish I could throw caution to the wind
It's simply that kind
of a day............
A day meant for wasting
A day meant for tasting
the finer things in life......
wandering through blue strife
on a hill-side somewhere
without a care........
A day for trespassing innocently
Just to find the perfect tree
With perfect arms waiting...
Where I would sit whilst contemplating
Life..............
with it's joy and strife
In the end, a perfect balance
For do we really have a chance
At true happiness without sorrow?
Waiting for the morrow
Hoping to dance
the dance of the free...
...of love and liberty,
But now I wait.......
Knowing the test of patience
Will ultimately create
A sweeter bliss
And what it is
I must simply wait and see
For I have no tree
In which to dream...............

Changing Canvas

It does not seem to matter
How young or old I am,
One thing I must acknowledge
Is that nothing stays the same,
So, lest I stand too long and pine
For joys of yesterday,
This present treasure I must find
Before it slips away…..

….For life is a changing canvas,
Life is a flowing stream,
Some days are sparkling diamonds
And some are broken dreams
But the God who expels the thunder
Cradles the earth in His hand,
He fills each day with wonder
And blessings rich and grand

So, when I cling to the present
Because I’m afraid to let go,
May His sweet love incessant
Remind me of what I know,
My unchanging God is forever,
The God of my present and past,
And as I gaze into the future
I know He’ll hold me fast

So I’ll cherish every hour,
For tomorrow, its change will bring,
Without it a bud would not flower,
A butterfly could never grow wings,
And we would not grow in our wisdom
If it weren’t for the changes we face,
Our failures would be our prison
Instead of a door to His grace

Old Man

He sits in his chair by the window,
And watches the children at play,
He listens to their carefree laughter
And in it is carried away,
Back to the days in his memory,
And oh, its music is sweet,
Before the days when he’s simply
The old man who lives down the street

Once he was that boy on the sidewalk
Full of vigor and vim,
He recalls happy hours on the ball-field,
Playing ‘til daylight grew dim,
And the laughter that drifts through the window
Could well be his friends as they’d meet,
Never dreaming that someday he’d just be
The old man who lives down the street

He watches the faces of young love
As arm in arm they go strolling by,
And, as he smiles in wistful reflection
A teardrop escapes from his eye,
For he too was once a young lover
With many a girl at his feet,
And his youthful dreams never pictured
An old man who lives down the street

He sees young mothers and daddies
With all of their youngsters in tow,
Their chatter and quarrels and laughter
Are just as it was long ago,
When all of that noise was heaven,
To be busy and weary was sweet,
Now he rocks, alone in the silence,
The old man who lives down the street

Once he was the one who was busy
With a family to feed and to teach,
Bills to pay and dreams to fulfill
With one always out of reach,
The hours and days, they flew by
With many a dead-line to meet,
Too busy to think of an old man
Alone in a house down the street

Now he sits in his chair by the window
To watch all the passers-by,
If you stop you would see he is smiling,
But oft with a tear in his eye,
For everyone is still so busy
With many a dead-line to meet,
And, after-all, he is simply
The old man who lives down the street

Paper Memories

Nothing makes us cry or laugh
Like a paper photograph
Paper memories, what a treasure
Poring over them with pleasure
There’s dear dad so long ago
Before his hair was white as snow
There’s young Bud in his snow suit
My oh my, but he was cute
There’s my school where braids were pulled
The old T-bird with gas tank full
Oh what memories, oh what laughs
In this book of photographs

There’s the house of yester-years
Rooms that echo smiles and tears
There’s the pump out in the yard
A splashing drink when work was hard
There’s the family, prim and proper
And little Tom, the real show-stopper
Lady, the dog I well remember
Flaming maples in September
Oh, here’s you, taken by surprise
Look at the fire in those eyes
And see young Charles, he looks like you
Way back in nineteen seventy- two

Here’s a photo of my mother
Paper treasure like no other
I gaze into her loving eyes
And hear her distant lullabies
Dear Lord, sometimes I feel like sighing
Life is short, there’s no denying
Help me treasure every smile
In thankfulness, walk every mile
So I can cherish by-gone stages
As I fondly turn the pages

Paper memories, paper treasures
Think I’ll take an hour of leisure
To sit awhile, to cry and laugh
And linger o’er each photograph
I’ll thank my God, through smiles and tears
For every loved one through the years
And someday others here will look
At my photo in some book
They’ll speak of when I passed away
I wonder what else they will say
Will they thank God and cry and laugh
As they look at my photograph?

Dreamer

Fluorescent orb on velvet blue
Ruler of the sky
As I sit here and gaze at you
I wish that I could fly
And on these wings of pure fancy
I think I would return
To simpler days, now fantasy
For which the dreamer yearns

Then I would fly until I’d find
Amongst the rolling hills
All rich and green and cedar-lined
Midst thrush and whip-poor-will
A cabin left to wanderers
Deserted in life’s race
Where I would stay and ponder
Things like poetry and grace

And on an evening just like this
Upon its porch I’d stay
Until the dawning’s dewy kiss
Would steal the night away
In heavenly seclusion
In nature’s living-room
The only soft intrusion
Is the sound of nature’s broom

I think t’would be so easy then
Perhaps for me to hear
The voice of God a-whispering
Softly in my ear
But duty is a constant friend
And dreaming is my foe
So I leave where I first began
Where God leads, I will go

The Other Guy

Today I was the other guy
And I watched myself as I walked by,
Today I got a chance to see
What others saw as I watched me,
Today I got a sad surprise
As I stood with the other guys

I received the words today,
I thoughtlessly to others say,
And I was so shocked to find
How I was to others blind,
I watched the people my life touched
And wasn’t sure I liked me much

I got my own advice today,
Could not choose to walk away,
As I spoke my mind to me
And told me what I thought of me,
I blush a little now in shame
As I hear me speak my name

I used to wish that I could see
Perhaps, what others thought of me,
But now as with the crowd I stand
I don’t think I’m very grand
Now I wish that I would be
The way I thought that I’d see me

So now when I begin to fret
And others feelings I forget
I’ll stand out with the other guys
And watch me through the others eyes,
Perhaps then, I’ll kinder be
As I see what others see,
Lord, please make a kinder me
And help me see what others see

Do We Pray?

Mothers, dear Mothers on life’s busy way
As we’re caring for others, how oft do we pray?
Do we pray with thanksgiving as we toil at our duties?
Glad to be living as we drink in life’s beauties

Or do we simply see ‘dishes’ in life’s soapy bubbles?
Though we have fed wishes and vanquished wee troubles
As the last ‘dish’ is dried, do we see our wealth?
And thank our Lord for the blessing of health

As we kiss our wee babies on their tender cheek
Do we pray for their dreams and the words they will speak?
Do we pray as we’re washing their tiny hands
That God will guide as they heed His commands

Do we pray as we calm and turn strife into song?
That the will of our child is neither too weak nor strong
As we tidy the tumbles of life’s busy day
Do we do it midst grumbles, or moms, do we pray?

Pray for their dreams as so quickly they’re growing
As the restlessness gleams in their bright eyes glowing
Then as we hug them as they go away
We’ll kindly release them for we know we can pray
